$20.3M Yahoo Data Breach Class Action Settlement Reached

Yahoo has agreed to pay over $20 million to resolve a class action lawsuit stemming from multiple data breaches that occurred between 2013 and 2016. This settlement benefits Canadian residents who had a Yahoo account during this period.

Overview of the Yahoo Data Breaches

Yahoo, a popular online service provider offering email, news, and other digital tools, faced multiple data breaches between 2013 and 2016. According to the class action lawsuit, Yahoo’s inadequate cybersecurity measures led to these breaches, resulting in damages for many users, including fraud, identity theft, and an increased risk of such issues.

Although Yahoo has not admitted any wrongdoing, they have agreed to pay $20.3 million to settle the case and compensate affected users.

Who Is Eligible for the Settlement?

Canadian residents who had a Yahoo account at any time between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2016, are eligible to receive compensation from this settlement.

What Compensation Is Available?

Class members can claim compensation in several ways:

  1. Cash Payments: Up to $25,000 for documented out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breaches.
  2. Reimbursement for Services: Up to 25% reimbursement for costs related to Yahoo’s advertisement-free or premium email services or Yahoo/Aabaco Small Business services.
  3. Lost Time Claims: For those who did not incur out-of-pocket expenses, up to five hours of lost time can be claimed at $25 per hour for each data breach notice received. If claims exceed the settlement funds, payments will be adjusted proportionally.
  4. Credit Monitoring Services: Instead of cash, class members can choose two years of free credit-monitoring services valued at $478.

Important Deadlines

To qualify for the settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by December 27, 2024.
