How Canadians Can Claim Up to $375 from the Rogers & Yahoo Class Action Settlement

A $20 million class action settlement involving Yahoo Inc. and Yahoo Canada Co. has been approved by an Ontario court, and the deadline for eligible Canadians to submit claims is fast approaching. If you had a Yahoo or Rogers account between 2012 and 2016, you might be eligible to claim up to $375 or receive other benefits as part of the settlement. Here’s what you need to know about the Yahoo and Rogers data breach settlement in Canada.

Who is Eligible for the Yahoo & Rogers Settlement?

Canadians who had a Yahoo or Rogers account between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2016 could qualify for compensation. The class action settlement stems from lawsuits alleging Yahoo had inadequate data security during that period, leading to breaches that compromised personal data.

Even though Yahoo and Rogers deny any wrongdoing, they have agreed to the $20 million settlement to resolve the matter.

What Can You Receive from the Settlement?

Eligible Canadians can choose one of three compensation options, depending on their experience and the impact of the data breaches:

1. Category A Claims

  • Reimbursement for Expenses: If you incurred costs or spent time dealing with the data breaches, you could claim up to $25 per hour for up to five hours per breach, with a maximum of 15 hours across all incidents. This could total $375.
  • Premium Services: If you paid for Yahoo’s premium services (like ad-free email) from August 1, 2013, to December 31, 2016, you may also be eligible for 25% of those costs.

2. Category B Claims

  • Compensation for Inconvenience: If you were impacted by the breaches but didn’t have specific expenses, you can claim up to $125 per breach, for a total of $375 if all three incidents affected you.

3. Category C Claims

  • Credit Monitoring: If you prefer added security, you can opt for two years of credit monitoring services instead of cash compensation. This service is valued at approximately $478.80.

How to Submit Your Claim

To claim your share of the settlement, you must submit a claim form by December 27, 2024. The forms can be found on the official settlement

Make sure to submit your claim on time, as failure to do so will result in forfeiting your right to compensation.
