The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) proudly received two prestigious Excellence in Currency awards at the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA) 2024 Coin Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. These awards celebrate the Mint’s commitment to innovation and excellence in coin manufacturing, recognizing two of its most groundbreaking achievements.
Best New Commemorative Coin: A Historic Collaboration with the Bahamas
The RCM earned the Best New Commemorative or Test Circulating Coin award for its collaboration with the Central Bank of The Bahamas. Together, they produced the 2024 25-cent circulation coin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Central Bank. This world-first coin features high-resolution color on both the obverse and reverse, utilizing RCM’s cutting-edge color pad-printing technology.
A Stunning Design
- Obverse: The coin showcases the Coat of Arms of The Bahamas, surrounded by the words “Commonwealth of The Bahamas”. The design incorporates elements in vibrant colors—blue, white, pink, and green—depicting the blue marlin, flamingo, and conch shell.
- Reverse: Features a native sloop set against a painted blue sea, near an island, with the inscription “THE CENTRAL BANK OF THE BAHAMAS” and “50th ANNIVERSARY 1974-2024”.
Released into general circulation on June 3, 2024, this coin was also available in custom packaging for collectors.
Best New Coin Manufacturing Innovation: A Sustainable Solution
In addition to the commemorative coin, RCM’s innovative approach to coin manufacturing was recognized with the Best New Coin Product, Process or Manufacturing Innovation award. The Mint introduced a new electroplating process that significantly reduces the environmental impact of traditional coin production.
Key Benefits:
- Cyanide-Free Process: Unlike traditional methods, RCM’s new process eliminates the use of cyanide, reducing its toxic environmental footprint.
- Safer for Employees: The new technology also improves employee health and safety by eliminating harsh chemicals needed for waste water treatment.
This environmentally responsible innovation not only advances bronze-colored circulation coins but also enhances the production of bi- and tri-metallic coins, typically used for higher denominations.
RCM’s Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
Marie Lemay, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, expressed her pride in the Mint’s accomplishments, stating, “To be recognized in two award categories by IACA is a tremendous peer endorsement of our pursuit of innovation.” She emphasized that these awards highlight the Mint’s efforts to deliver great value for coin users around the world while advancing sustainable practices in coin manufacturing.
Previous Excellence in Currency Awards
This latest achievement adds to the RCM’s impressive track record at the Excellence in Currency Awards, which have recognized the Mint for several notable projects, including:
- 2023: Best New Circulating Coin for the bi-metallic $2 coin commemorating the late Queen Elizabeth II.
- 2022: Best New Commemorative Coin for the Barbados $1 Glow-in-the-Dark Flying Fish Coin.
- 2021: Special Award for the Recognition Medal honoring Canada’s front-line workers.
