Historic Chapman Set of Gold Dollars to be Featured in Stack’s Bowers November 2024 Showcase Auction

Stack’s Bowers Galleries is set to offer a truly extraordinary collection of Gold Dollars in its November 2024 Showcase Auction. This collection, known as the “Chapman Set,” has remained off the market for over a century and is now poised to make a significant impact on the numismatic community. With a pedigree tracing back to the Chapman Brothers’ historic coin auctions from 1903 to 1916, this collection holds both historical and collector significance.

A Century-Old Treasure

The Chapman Set of Gold Dollars, discovered recently and featured in Coin World, was previously hidden from the public eye. The coins were submitted for grading at PCGS, and their appearance in the auction will undoubtedly generate excitement in the numismatic market. The collection was originally amassed by Alexander Parker Wylie, an Illinois banker and early numismatic dealer, who acquired the coins through various Chapman auctions during the early 1900s. Wylie’s holdings were later consigned to M.H. Bolender in the mid-1930s, but this Gold Dollar collection remained a mystery until now.

Numismatic Significance of the Chapman Set

The Chapman Set includes a rare collection of Gold Dollars that have not been seen by collectors for over 100 years. Mark Schimel, Director of East Coast Retail at Stack’s Bowers Galleries, expressed his amazement at the discovery: “We were astounded that these coins had not been seen for so long by anyone in the numismatic community.”

The collection, which was last auctioned before the United States entered World War I, is now being offered in an auction that celebrates its legacy. According to Brian Kendrella, President of Stack’s Bowers Galleries, the sale of these coins represents a continuation of their long history of offering legendary numismatic cabinets. The company has been at the forefront of numismatic auctions for over 90 years, and they are honored to bring this exceptional collection to market.
