The Chapman Set of Gold Dollars, a long-hidden collection with historical significance, is set to make waves in the numismatic world when it crosses the auction block in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ November 2024 Showcase Auction. This exceptional collection, meticulously preserved for over a century, includes rare gold dollars from auctions conducted by famous coin dealers Henry and S.H. Chapman between 1903 and 1916.
A Legendary Numismatic Collection
Designated the “Chapman Set,” this collection has remained largely unseen by the numismatic community for decades. The coins, many of which were part of Chapman auction sales from over a century ago, were initially acquired by Alexander Parker Wylie, an Illinois banker and early numismatics dealer. Wylie’s vast collection of currency and numismatic items was consigned to M.H. Bolender and sold in several prominent auctions in the 1930s, but the Gold Dollar set was kept intact and never included.
Rare Coins and Historical Significance
Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Mark Schimel, Director of East Coast Retail, expressed excitement over the discovery of these coins, noting that their absence from public view has only added to their allure. Brian Kendrella, President of Stack’s Bowers Galleries, emphasized the firm’s 90+ years of experience in presenting legendary collections like this one.
The Chapman Set includes some of the most coveted Gold Dollar coins in American numismatics. Some of the highlights include:
