A unique, one-of-a-kind pure gold coin from the Royal Canadian Mint has set a new record by selling for over $1.5 million. The coin, named The Dance Screen (The Scream Too), boasts 99.99% purity and weighs an impressive 10 kilograms, surpassing the previous auction record for coins in Canada.

The Sale Details

The rare coin was sold for $1,561,250 at a live auction conducted by Heffel Fine Art Auction House on November 20, 2024. The winning bid came from an anonymous buyer, marking an extraordinary event in the world of numismatics.

A Tribute to Haida Art

Designed by Chief 7IDANsuu (James Hart), a master carver of the Haida Nation, the coin honors traditional Haida art and culture. Its reverse side replicates imagery from Hart’s iconic red cedar panel carving, featuring figures such as a shaman, beaver, raven, eagle, frog, orca, and a mother bear with cubs.

Artistic and Cultural Features

The coin’s edge includes six pearlescent pieces of abalone shell, shimmering in light to mimic the appearance of Haida copper shields, which traditionally symbolize wealth. On the obverse, Canadian artist Steven Rosati’s effigy of King Charles III is featured.

Royal Canadian Mint president Marie Lemay expressed excitement over the interest shown by collectors and the recognition of both the Mint’s craftsmanship and Hart’s artistic brilliance.
