Canada Recalls Vehicles Over Faulty Brakes and Headlamps

This week, several major automakers have issued recalls affecting a variety of vehicle models due to performance and safety issues with critical parts such as headlights, brakes, and more. Here’s an overview of the affected vehicles and the reasons behind these recalls.

Headlight Issue in Multiple GM Models

General Motors (GM) has expanded a previous recall for several vehicle makes, including BrightDrop, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. The recall affects over 270,000 vehicles due to a software glitch that can prevent the lower beam headlamps from turning on when it’s dark outside. This issue occurs when the multi-function switch is set to the “Off” or “Parking Lamp” position.

The result of this malfunction is reduced visibility for the driver and less visibility for other road users, significantly increasing the risk of an accident. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail, and a visit to the dealership will be required to update the body control module software.

Braking Defect in Chevrolet Equinox EVs

In addition to the headlamp issue, GM has also recalled nearly 6,000 Chevrolet Equinox electric vehicles in Canada. The recall stems from a braking defect linked to a malfunction in the brake control module software. This problem can prevent the vehicle from slowing down or stopping when the cruise control system detects a need to apply the brakes.

This issue only affects certain all-wheel-drive 2025 Chevrolet Equinox models that do not include the Super Cruise feature. GM will notify owners directly and advise a visit to the dealership for repairs.

Tesla Recall Due to Rearview Camera Issue

Tesla has issued a recall for 2024 and 2025 model year vehicles, including the Models 3, S, X, and Y, due to a software problem that may cause the computer circuit board to short-circuit. As a result, the rearview camera image may fail to display when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, which is a required safety feature according to Canadian regulations.

This issue affects nearly 25,000 Tesla vehicles, but Tesla has already issued an over-the-air software update to fix the problem. Affected owners will be notified via email.

Kia Recalls Due to Braking and Visibility Concerns

Niro EV Models Affected by Braking Issue

Kia has recalled approximately 2,200 Niro EV models from 2019 to 2022 due to a potential issue where water may enter the integrated electronic brake (IEB) system. This could cause the brake system to corrode, potentially resulting in reduced braking power and extended stopping distances, which increases the risk of a crash.

Kia will notify affected owners by mail and advise them to visit their dealership for either the application of silicone to the IEB bolt hole or replacement of the IEB system.

Sorento Models Face Headlamp Malfunction

Kia has also recalled 7,404 Sorento vehicles from the 2024-2025 model years, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. A software problem may cause the head and tail lamps to turn off, leading to reduced visibility and an increased crash risk. Kia plans to notify owners by mail and encourage them to visit the dealership for a software update to the body domain control unit.

Fiat Chrysler Recalls Jeep Cherokee Models for Power Transfer Unit Issue

Fiat Chrysler has issued a recall for approximately 20,000 Jeep Cherokee models from the 2017-2019 model years due to improper installation of the power transfer unit (PTU). If the PTU becomes damaged or fails, it could result in a loss of power to the wheels or cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly when parked if the parking brake is not engaged.

This recall specifically affects certain vehicles equipped with a two-speed PTU. Fiat Chrysler will notify affected owners by mail to arrange for necessary repairs.

Honda Recalls Acura ZDX Vehicles for Bolted Parts Issue

Honda has issued a recall affecting just five 2024 Acura ZDX vehicles due to an issue with the bolts securing the passenger-side front stabilizer bar bracket. If these bolts are not properly tightened, they could become loose, potentially damaging high-voltage cables or battery-coolant lines. This could lead to a loss of power to the wheels and increase the risk of a crash.

Honda will contact affected owners by mail to arrange for the tightening of the bolts where necessary.

Conclusion

These recalls highlight the importance of regular vehicle inspections and addressing potential safety issues promptly. If you own any of the affected models, be sure to check for recall notifications and visit your dealership for necessary repairs or software updates. By staying informed, you can ensure your vehicle remains safe and roadworthy.
