Queensland Parents Could Receive Annual Allowance in 2025 for Driving Kids to School

Government Initiative to Ease School Transport Costs

Queensland parents who drive their children to and from school may be eligible for hundreds of dollars in financial assistance through the School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS). This government-backed initiative is designed to help families manage school transport costs, whether they drive their children or rely on public transport options such as buses, trains, ferries, or light rail.

Who Qualifies for the Allowance?

The STAS eligibility criteria are primarily distance-based. To qualify, students must meet the following conditions:

  • State Primary Schools: The nearest state primary school must be more than 3.2 km away from the family’s residence.
  • State Secondary Schools: The nearest state secondary school must be more than 4.8 km away.
  • Non-State Schools: Parents of students attending non-state schools may apply if they live beyond the required distance from both the nearest state and non-state schools.

Public Transport Assistance Also Available

Families who rely on public transportation for school commutes can also receive financial support. The scheme covers costs associated with school bus services, ferries, trains, and light rail transport. This ensures that families using public transport are not excluded from assistance.

Extra Help for Low-Income Families

The STAS also includes a safety-net provision for students from financially vulnerable families. Those eligible under this category include:

  • Children of parents holding a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card
  • Students under a child protection order

For these students, distance-based eligibility requirements may be waived, allowing them to receive transport assistance regardless of proximity to their school.

General Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the School Transport Assistance Scheme, students must meet the following conditions:

  • The student’s parents or guardians must reside in Queensland.
  • The student must attend an approved school.
  • The student must be 18 years of age or younger.

How to Apply

Parents who believe they qualify for the School Transport Assistance Scheme can apply through the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads website. Applications typically require proof of residency, school enrollment, and any necessary concession cards.

With the rising cost of living, this initiative provides valuable financial relief for Queensland families, making school transport more affordable and accessible.
