Canada Implements Measures to Combat Fraud in Express Entry System

Canada Implements Measures to Combat Fraud in Express Entry System

On December 23, 2024, the Government of Canada, led by the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced important updates to the Express Entry system. These changes aim to strengthen the integrity of Canada’s immigration process by reducing fraud and ensuring the country’s immigration system remains fair and responsive to economic needs.

Removal of Additional Points for Job Offers

One of the key changes coming into effect in spring 2025 is the removal of additional points for Express Entry candidates who have a job offer. This temporary measure is designed to combat fraud by eliminating the incentive to buy or sell labor market impact assessments (LMIAs) in order to improve an applicant’s chances of being selected for permanent residence. The move is part of Canada’s ongoing efforts to ensure a fairer immigration system for all applicants.

Impact of the Changes on Express Entry Candidates

Once implemented, these changes will affect all candidates in the Express Entry pool who are applying for permanent residence, including those already working in Canada on a temporary basis. However, it is important to note that candidates who have already been invited to apply or whose applications are in progress will not be affected by the new rules. The change will apply to both existing candidates with job offers in the pool and new candidates entering the system after the update takes effect.

Ensuring a Strong and Fair Immigration System

Immigration is a critical driver of Canada’s economic growth and success, as the country continues to attract skilled workers to fill key sectors. The Express Entry system plays a vital role in managing applications from skilled workers, including those applying through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and certain Provincial Nominee Program streams.

Minister Marc Miller emphasized that while the government is taking these steps to reduce fraud, the goal remains to bring the best and brightest talent to Canada. “Immigration has always been a cornerstone of Canada’s success, and we remain committed to welcoming the skilled workers our economy needs to continue thriving,” said Minister Miller.
