Ford Issues Second Recall for 33,000 Escape and Bronco SUVs Over Fuel Leak Risk

Ford Issues Second Recall for 33,000 Escape and Bronco SUVs Over Fuel Leak Risk

Ford Motor Company is recalling over 33,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potentially dangerous fuel leak issue that could lead to engine fires. This latest recall impacts certain 2020–2022 Ford Escape and 2021–2023 Bronco Sport vehicles equipped with 1.5-liter three-cylinder engines.

What Models Are Affected?

The specific models included in this recall are:

  • 2020–2022 Ford Escape
  • 2021–2023 Ford Bronco Sport

Only vehicles with the 1.5L three-cylinder engine are impacted. Ford issued this recall after identifying that repairs made under previous recalls for this same issue were not correctly performed.

Why Is Ford Issuing Another Recall?

The root of the problem lies in the fuel injector, which may crack and leak fuel into the engine compartment. If this fuel comes into contact with hot engine or exhaust surfaces, it creates a serious fire risk.

Although the vehicles were previously recalled for similar concerns, Ford admitted that some of those earlier repair jobs were inadequately executed, prompting the company to reissue a recall to properly address the issue.

How Ford Plans to Fix the Problem

Ford’s updated remedy will not involve replacing the fuel injector. Instead, the automaker will:

  • Provide a free software update for the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM)
  • This update will monitor the fuel injector for signs of cracking and reduce potential fire risk by activating a warning light and limiting engine power if a problem is detected

Timeline and What Owners Should Do

Ford plans to:

  • Notify its network of dealers by April 24, 2025
  • Begin mailing owner notification letters by May 1, 2025

If you own one of the affected vehicles, you should schedule an appointment with your local Ford dealership to have the PCM software updated as soon as possible.

No Injuries Reported, But Risks Remain

As of now, no injuries or accidents have been reported in connection with this recall. However, due to the potential fire hazard, it’s critical that affected vehicle owners take prompt action.
