Mountain Equipment Company (MEC) has issued an important recall for two types of children’s snowsuits, following concerns over mould contamination. The MEC Toaster and Toaster Bunting Suits, designed to provide warmth and protection for young children, are being pulled from shelves due to potential health risks posed by mould exposure.
The recall affects specific snowsuits with item numbers 5037-265 and 5047-839. These items, sold between August and December 2024 in Canada, are primarily one-piece waterproof snowsuits equipped with dual front zippers. Customers who purchased these snowsuits with purchase order numbers 666483 and 666503 are urged to return the products to MEC.
The recalled MEC Toaster Bunting Suits are available in sizes 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. These suits come in a variety of colors, including Summit Winter Critters, Salmonberry, Wild Berry, and Earthen Gold. The MEC Toaster Suits, designed for slightly older children, are available in child sizes 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, with color options like Salmonberry, Purple Orchid, Summit, Black POW, and Dark Forest Mountain Snow.
According to Health Canada, approximately 3,200 units of the recalled snowsuits were sold in Canada during the specified time frame. As of February 11, 2025, MEC has received two reports of children affected by mould exposure linked to these recalled snowsuits. This development has prompted the company to issue a public recall and offer refunds or exchanges for affected products.
Mould contamination in children’s snowsuits presents a serious health risk, particularly for individuals with compromised immune systems, lung conditions, or allergies to mould. Health Canada has reiterated the importance of returning the affected MEC snowsuits to mitigate any potential risks associated with prolonged exposure.
