Inflation Refund Part of New York’s 2025 State Budget
Governor Hochul has proposed a $252 billion state budget, with the Assembly and Senate pushing for $256 billion and $259 billion, respectively. Lawmakers have until April 1, 2025, to finalize the budget, and officials expect an agreement to be reached before the deadline.
As part of this financial plan, the Inflation Refund aims to address rising living costs by redistributing excess tax revenue back to residents. The refund comes as the state experiences record-high revenue collection through sales tax, largely due to inflationary pressures.

Who Will Receive Inflation Refund Checks?
Once the budget is approved, the Inflation Refund will distribute approximately $3 billion in direct payments to about 8.6 million New York taxpayers statewide. The payments will be based on income levels:
- Single taxpayers earning up to $150,000 per year will receive $300.
- Joint tax filers earning up to $300,000 per year will receive $500.
Governor Hochul emphasized that this initiative is meant to ease financial burdens on middle-class families, stating, “Because of inflation, New York has generated unprecedented revenues through the sales tax — now, we’re returning that cash back to middle-class families.”
When Can New Yorkers Expect Their Inflation Refund Checks?
While an exact distribution timeline has not yet been announced, checks are expected to be sent out later in 2025, once the budget passes and the refund program is implemented.
