This funding is a significant step toward addressing the challenges faced by rural communities and supporting diverse populations in the region.

Improving Healthcare Access and Supporting Workers

This investment aims to:

  • Address ongoing healthcare costs: The funding will assist facilities in managing rising expenses.
  • Support and retain healthcare workers: By providing financial stability, organizations can focus on retaining critical staff.
  • Enhance service access: Rural communities will see improved access to critical healthcare services.
  • Meet urgent healthcare needs: The funding will help tackle immediate healthcare challenges unique to the region.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Receives $14.8 Million

Kevin Holland, MPP for Thunder Bay – Atikokan, and Rhonda Crocker Ellacott, CEO of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC), announced that TBRHSC will receive $14.8 million to strengthen its ability to deliver high-quality patient care and meet growing demands.

“This is about building a stronger, more resilient healthcare system for the long term,” said Holland. He emphasized the importance of ensuring healthcare providers are positioned for both current and future needs.

Crocker Ellacott echoed this sentiment, calling the funding “monumental and transformational.” She noted that this is the first time the centre has been in such a strong financial position, allowing for balanced operations and long-term planning.

Historic Investments for Sustainable Healthcare

The additional investments in the 2024-2025 base funding will provide stability for the TBRHSC and other regional healthcare organizations.

  • First balanced budget in years: Crocker Ellacott highlighted that, for the first time, the centre is looking at ending the fiscal year without a deficit.
  • Support for regional partners: As Northwestern Ontario’s only regional tertiary acute care hospital, TBRHSC’s stability ensures it can assist smaller partner organizations.
  • Recruitment and retention: With the funding secured, the centre can confidently recruit staff for vacant positions and focus on sustainable operations.

Addressing Local Needs in Atikokan

In addition to TBRHSC, Atikokan Health and Community Services will receive $184,690. This funding will enhance their ability to serve residents effectively and address unique community needs.

Looking Ahead

The funding represents a commitment to strengthening healthcare across Northwestern Ontario. By addressing immediate needs and planning for the future, this investment will allow healthcare providers to focus on delivering exceptional care close to home.

As Crocker Ellacott stated, “This enables us to build upon the exceptional care we are currently delivering while ensuring a sustainable future for healthcare in the region.”
