A Vision for Seamless Transit
The extension to downtown Brampton will span approximately four kilometers, tunneling from Brampton Gateway Terminal to the city’s downtown core. This initiative aligns with Ontario’s broader transit expansion strategy, which prioritizes fast, affordable, and reliable public transportation solutions across the province.
Premier Doug Ford emphasized the significance of this project, stating, “By tunneling the Hazel McCallion Line into downtown Brampton, we’re helping tens of thousands of daily riders connect seamlessly to world-class transit that will extend across the region.”

Planning and Design in Motion
The next phase of the project will involve detailed planning and design to ensure optimal alignment of the extension. Metrolinx will conduct studies to refine construction approaches and improve connectivity to the Brampton Innovation District GO Station. These efforts will align with Brampton’s vision for Main Street and the downtown core.
Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria highlighted the commitment to Brampton’s growth, saying, “Last year, we made a promise to pave the way for a new priority transit extension that will shorten the daily commutes of tens of thousands of people in Brampton, and we’re getting it done.”
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
The extension of the Hazel McCallion Line will serve as a crucial link between various transit systems, including GO Transit, Brampton Transit, Züm, and MiWay. This integration will streamline commutes, save travel time, and reduce congestion for both transit riders and drivers alike.
This expansion is part of Ontario’s ambitious $70 billion investment in public transit infrastructure over the next decade, making it one of the most significant transit growth initiatives in North America.
Brampton’s Future as a Transit Hub
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown hailed the project as a transformative step for the city, stating, “This is a bold step toward shaping a future where Brampton continues to thrive and flourish as a dynamic, modern city. The commitment from Premier Ford and the Government of Ontario to fund the extension of the LRT into our city, including a tunneled section into downtown, is truly a game changer.”
As Brampton and Mississauga prepare for this transformative project, residents can look forward to a more connected and accessible transit system that will serve generations to come.
