The Ontario government is taking significant steps to make electric vehicle (EV) ownership more convenient and accessible by investing in over 1,300 new EV charging ports. These charging stations will be strategically placed in small and medium-sized communities, signaling a major milestone in Ontario’s commitment to transitioning toward greener transportation and supporting economic development in the EV sector.

Investing in a Greener Future
As Ontario’s electric vehicle industry continues to flourish, bolstered by substantial investments in EV and EV battery manufacturing, the need for an extensive and reliable charging network has become more crucial than ever. With more than 201,000 electric vehicles already on Ontario roads, this infrastructure expansion is designed to support not only current EV drivers but also encourage more residents to consider making the switch to electric.
Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Electrification, emphasized the importance of this initiative:
“We’re putting shovels in the ground to build more charging stations and make life easier for drivers, including a focus on smaller and underserved communities.”
Key Details of the EV Infrastructure Plan
The new charging ports will be distributed across 270 locations in Ontario. These locations include essential community spaces such as arenas, hospitals, parks, and recreation centers. Special emphasis is being placed on underserved and smaller communities to ensure a broader and more connected EV charging network.
Key Highlights of the Plan:
- Total Investment: $63 million toward the installation of publicly accessible EV chargers.
- Focus Areas: Communities with populations under 170,000, as well as Indigenous communities.
- Northern Ontario: 190 of the new charging ports will be situated in northern Ontario, significantly expanding charging options in the region.
Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, added:
“Improving EV charging infrastructure is essential to ensuring drivers are confident in electric vehicles. By focusing on smaller and medium-sized communities, we’re filling gaps in underserved areas.”
Charging Options and Electricity Initiatives
The new charging sites will feature both Level 2 and Level 3 charging stations, or a combination of the two. In addition to physical infrastructure, the government has introduced the Ultra-Low Overnight Electricity Price Plan. This new pricing plan benefits EV owners by offering lower electricity rates at night, potentially saving EV drivers up to $90 annually.
The province is also exploring the potential for an Electric Vehicle Charger Discount Electricity Rate, which would further reduce charging costs and make EV adoption more appealing.

Ontario’s EV sector has seen impressive growth, with $45 billion in new electric vehicle and EV battery investments over the last four years. Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, explained how the new infrastructure supports this growth:
“By expanding access to charging infrastructure beyond urban centres, we’re ensuring workers and families across the province can feel confident in their adoption of EVs.”
The $91 million EV ChargeON program underpins this effort, featuring two primary funding streams:
- Community Sites Stream: Supporting the installation of chargers in public spaces.
- Government Sites Stream: The bid for this stream closed in September 2024, marking another step toward strengthening EV infrastructure.
