Sephora shoppers and haircare fans, you’ll want to check your bathrooms immediately. A popular salon-brand shampoo is being recalled in Canada due to a microbial hazard, which could pose a health risk. Health Canada has issued an urgent recall notice for the Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo, sold in various sizes at Sephora, salons, and other retail locations across the country.

What’s the Concern?
Health Canada’s recall is linked to a potential contamination of the product with Plurabacter gergoviae, a type of bacteria. While this bacteria is generally not a concern for healthy individuals, it could be harmful to those with weakened immune systems, underlying health conditions, or other vulnerabilities. The government agency has advised consumers with compromised immune systems to avoid using the affected shampoo.
Which Products Are Affected?
The recall impacts all sizes and lots of Amika’s Mirrorball Shampoo sold between May 2023 and November 2024. The affected products include:
- Mirrorball Shampoo 275 mL (UPC code: GTIN 810905032637)
- Mirrorball Shampoo 1 L (UPC code: GTIN 810905035836)
- Mirrorball Shampoo 500 mL (UPC code: GTIN 840117808744)
- Mirrorball Shampoo + Conditioner 20 mL Duo (UPC code: GTIN 840117808713)
- Mirrorball Shampoo 60 mL (UPC code: GTIN 840117809260)
If you purchased any of these sizes in the specified period, it’s critical to check your bottles and consider returning them.
Health Canada’s Warning and Reports
As of January 27, 2025, Amika had received 48 reports in Canada of the shampoo developing a foul odor, as well as two reports of irritation or allergic reactions. While Amika asserts that no severe health incidents have occurred, the company has initiated this recall after identifying a quality control issue at a third-party manufacturing site. The recall is being done “out of an abundance of caution,” they explained.
Amika has emphasized that after consulting with an independent toxicology group, they are confident that the product doesn’t pose a serious risk to healthy individuals.
What Should You Do If You Have the Recalled Shampoo?
If you own one of the affected bottles of Amika Mirrorball Shampoo, it is strongly recommended that you stop using it immediately. Amika is offering full refunds for the product, whether you purchased it in-store or online. To claim your refund:
- In-Store Purchases: Return the product to the store where you bought it.
- Online Purchases: Fill out a form provided by Amika (including a photo of the shampoo bottle) to receive your refund.

What’s Next for Amika Products?
Amika has already pulled the recalled shampoo from Sephora’s website, but the Mirrorball Conditioner remains available for sale. Health Canada reports that approximately 95,000 units of the affected shampoo were sold in Canada.
The company has assured customers that they are reformulating the shampoo and expect a new version to be available at retailers by April 2025, once it has undergone thorough testing.
