General Motors (GM) has issued a recall impacting over 132,000 heavy-duty Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks due to a tailgate defect that poses a serious safety risk. The issue involves power-unlatching tailgates that may unexpectedly unlatch, even when the vehicle is in Park.

Affected Models

The recall applies to the following vehicles equipped with power tailgates:

  • 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500
  • 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500

What’s Causing the Problem?

The defect occurs when water enters the tailgate and contacts the gate-release switch, potentially causing a short circuit. This malfunction can result in the tailgate unlatching unexpectedly.

Risk: An unlatched tailgate increases the chance of cargo falling out, creating road hazards that could lead to accidents.

What GM Is Doing to Fix It

GM will address the issue by replacing the exterior touchpad switch assemblies on affected vehicles.

  • Cost: Repairs will be provided free of charge.
  • Owner Notification: GM will begin notifying owners starting January 13, 2025.
