Why Was Thomson Reuters Sued?
Thomson Reuters, a global AI and technology company, faced a class action lawsuit accusing it of violating Californians’ privacy rights. The company allegedly sold access to personal information through its Clear public records tool without obtaining proper consent.
Clear, a widely used investigative tool, compiles data from public records and other sources, enabling customers to access sensitive personal information. The lawsuit claimed that this practice breached privacy laws in California by exposing residents’ information without authorization.
Thomson Reuters has not admitted any wrongdoing but has agreed to settle the case for $27.5 million to resolve the allegations.
