GM Recalls 90,000 Cadillac and Chevrolet Vehicles Over Transmission Defect

General Motors (GM) has announced a recall of over 90,000 Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles due to a serious transmission defect that could lead to the front wheels locking up while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall, which was officially listed on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website on March 6, 2025, affects several models, including:

  • 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6
  • 2020-2021 Cadillac CT4 and CT5
  • 2020-2022 Chevrolet Camaro

These vehicles are all equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which has been identified as the source of the issue.

Why Is GM Recalling These Vehicles?

According to GM’s recall notice, the transmission can become internally damaged, potentially causing sudden wheel lock-up while driving. This can lead to loss of vehicle control and a heightened risk of accidents.

GM has so far received 115 field reports related to this problem, including one report of an accident allegedly caused by the transmission defect.

While no lawsuits have been filed against GM regarding this recall, the company remains under scrutiny as automotive safety experts and consumer advocates monitor the situation closely.

What Should Affected Owners Do?

If you own one of the affected vehicles, here’s what you need to know:

  • GM is offering a free fix. Owners can take their vehicles to an authorized GM dealership, where dealers will install new transmission control module monitoring software to help prevent further damage.
  • Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on April 21, 2025. If you receive a notice, it is important to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
  • If you are unsure whether your vehicle is affected, you can check by entering your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall website or by contacting your local GM dealer.

GM Faces Broader Scrutiny Over Vehicle Defects

This recall comes as GM is already under investigation by the NHTSA for potential engine failures affecting nearly 878,000 vehicles. That probe, launched in January 2025, focuses on GM trucks and SUVs from the 2019-2024 model years, including:

  • Chevrolet Silverado
  • GMC Sierra
  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • Chevrolet Suburban
  • GMC Yukon
  • Cadillac Escalade

These vehicles are equipped with the L87 V8 engine, which has been linked to multiple reports of sudden engine failure.

What’s Next for GM and Affected Vehicle Owners?

As GM works to repair vehicles affected by the recall, owners should stay updated on potential legal actions, investigations, and further recalls.

If you believe your vehicle has experienced transmission issues before receiving an official recall notice, you should contact GM customer service or report the issue to the NHTSA.
