Virgin Australia to Refund 61,000 Customers After Ticket Pricing 'Glitch'

Virgin Australia has announced a major refund initiative, offering compensation to tens of thousands of customers who were inadvertently overcharged due to a long-running system error. The move comes after the airline discovered that its pricing system had wrongly recalculated fares for travelers who made changes to their itineraries over the past five years.

🧾 What Happened?

Between April 21, 2020, and March 31, 2025, Virgin Australia’s system mistakenly applied incorrect charges to itinerary changes, resulting in 61,000 affected customers—roughly 0.1% of total bookings during that time frame.

The pricing glitch was found to have occurred when customers altered their flight plans. According to Virgin, the system did not properly follow internal policies on how fare adjustments should be calculated. Instead, it applied excessive fees that were never supposed to be charged.

💬 Virgin Australia Responds

A spokesperson for Virgin Australia addressed the error, saying:

“We recently found that in some instances, bookings were repriced in a way that does not align with our policy. We are refunding all impacted guests for that amount.”

The airline emphasized that it deeply regrets the mistake and is taking full accountability. It has launched a dedicated “Itinerary Change Claim Program” to ensure affected travelers receive the refunds they are owed.

💸 How Much Are the Refunds Worth?

On average, each impacted customer is expected to receive a refund of approximately $55. Virgin and auditing firm Deloitte Australia have teamed up to manage and expedite the claims process.

Travelers will be contacted directly by Virgin Australia with clear instructions on how to claim their refund. The airline has confirmed that guests will have up to 12 months to lodge a claim.

If any eligible refunds go unclaimed, Virgin Australia has committed to donating those funds to charitable organizations.

🛂 Involvement of the ACCC

Virgin has also notified the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and pledged full cooperation with the regulator to ensure transparency and regulatory compliance throughout the refund process.

✅ A Step Toward Rebuilding Trust

By taking swift and transparent action, Virgin is aiming to restore customer trust and show that even large corporations can act with integrity when mistakes come to light.
