Walmart, Loblaws, and Other Ontario Stores Recall Hazardous Products: Health and Safety Concerns for Shoppers

Walmart, Loblaws, and Other Ontario Stores Recall Hazardous Products

Ontario residents are being urged to check their households for several recalled products from major retailers like Walmart and Loblaws this week. These items may present health hazards ranging from choking risks to burns and allergic reactions. Here’s what you need to know about the latest product recalls in Ontario:

1. Century Brand Flaked Light Tuna Hot & Spicy

Several batches of Century brand Flaked Light Tuna Hot & Spicy have been recalled due to the presence of wheat, which is not declared on the product label. This could pose a significant health risk for individuals with celiac disease or gluten-related disorders. The affected products are as follows:

  • Century Light Tuna Flakes in Hot & Spicy Sauce (180 g) – UPC: 8 06840 00009 1 (All codes where wheat is not declared)
  • Century Flaked Light Tuna Hot & Spicy Style / Light Tuna Flakes Hot & Spicy Style (180 g) – UPC: 7 74310 18460 5 (All codes where wheat is not declared)
  • Century Tuna Value Pack – Flakes in Oil, Hot & Spicy (4 x 180 g) – UPC: 7 48485 91552 4 (All codes where wheat is not declared for the Hot & Spicy Style variety)

These products have been recalled because they may contain wheat, which can be dangerous for individuals with gluten sensitivity. While no adverse reactions have been reported yet, it is crucial for affected consumers to avoid consuming these items. The recall is a reminder for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance to always check labels carefully.

What you should do: If you or someone in your household has a gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, it is strongly advised not to consume these recalled products. Return the items to the store or dispose of them immediately.

2. Ivy City Mini Pajamas

The Ivy City brand has issued a recall for several children’s pajamas due to a flammability hazard. These pajamas do not meet the required flammability standards for sleepwear and can pose a burn risk if exposed to ignition sources such as stoves, candles, or matches. The affected products include:

  • Mini Bella Bunny Pajamas (with and without feathers)
  • Mini Camille Pajamas (with and without feathers)
  • Mini Petra Short Sleeve Nightgown (green)
  • Mini Petra Long Sleeve Nightgown (purple)

These pajamas were sold in various children’s sizes, from 12-18 months up to 13-14 years. The pajamas are made of 100% polyester, with other material details not provided. They were sold from February 2024 to July 2024 in Canada and the United States, with a total of 18 units sold in Canada and approximately 700 units sold in the U.S.

Risks

The primary concern with these pajamas is their inability to meet safety standards for flammability, which could result in severe burns if exposed to flames. Loose-fitting clothing, particularly in sleepwear, can ignite easily, leading to rapid burns.

What you should do

As of January 28, no injuries have been reported in Canada. However, parents and caregivers should immediately stop using the recalled items. Return them to the place of purchase or follow the company’s instructions for a refund or exchange.

Stay vigilant and ensure that all recalled items are safely removed from your household to avoid any health or safety risks. Always keep an eye on updates regarding product recalls in Ontario to protect yourself and your loved ones.
